Everything you need to know about engineered wood flooring
Engineered flooring is now more popular than ever before with its wide range of thickness, colours, and finishes. Below we share everything you need to know about engineered wood flooring.
What type of wood?
The type of wood you choose very much depends upon your budget, taste and chosen room. Oak is a good all-rounder, as it works well in both modern and traditional homes. Beech and maple are soft timbers, which generally suit a more country-style interior. All of these woods can be found as engineered boards of varying thickness.
Reasons for using engineered wood
There are many reasons why individuals opt for engineered wood. It is available in all different woods, finishes and colours. You can also lay engineered wood over different types of flooding, including concrete, which is not always possible with solid wood. It is also often available pre-finished to your choosing.
Restoring engineered floors
The good news is that engineered wood can be restored, although when it comes to engineered floor sanding, it does depend upon the thickness of the wood. Engineered wood is available anywhere between 3mm, right up to 15mm, and it is the thicker wood, generally that of 7mm plus, that can be sanded several times. Ideally, you are best using the services of a floor sanding company who can use a floor sanding machine that has been specifically designed for sanding engineered wood.
Choose your finish
Engineered wood flooring can be incredibly versatile in terms of its finish. It can be distressed, grooved and varnished and lacquer can be added in a range of colours. Adding a varnish to engineered wood is a good way to make the flooring last longer, especially if you have young children. Many companies offer floor sanding and varnishing services for engineered wood which is well worth the investment.
What will it cost?
The cost of engineered wood is just as varied as that of solid wood. Single plank designs are typically more expensive, as the surface is derived from one log. Added treatments such as stains and bevels also increase the price.
